The following significant Infrastructure Projects reaffirms the Queensland State Governments position to have Bowen become a major economic powerhouse for the future as part of the Northern Economic Triangle: Bowen – Townsville – Mt. Isa.

Bowen Collinsville Enterprise Inc., which Bowen Shire Council financially supports, has facilitated with the State Government in bringing these projects to fruition.

Abbott Point Industrial Land
Proposed development of over 8,000 Ha as industrial precinct incorporating mix of heavy, medium, light and food value adding industries. Official declaration of the State Development Area at Abbot Point by Qld government is expected in January 2008.

Abbot Point is also one of three locations in Queensland under consideration by the Chinese Aluminium Company to construct an Aluminium Refinery and Smelter with construction costs estimated in excess several billion dollars.

Water For Bowen Project

SunWater, the State Government and the Bowen Shire Council are in the process of the planning for the Water for Bowen Project which will channel water from the Burdekin River to Bowen via a 150 kilometre channel and pipeline system that will supply 60,000 mega litres of water per annum for industrial and horticultural use in the Bowen area. BCE inc. is project representative in the environmental impact assessment process.

  Coal Rail Project – ‘Missing Link’
QLD government strongly supports Queensland Rail in their partnerships with mining companies for the $920 million “The Missing Rail Link Project” which is the construction of a rail line between Newlands and Goonyella mines and will also provide links by rail to the other Bowen Basin Coal fields to the coal loading facility at Abbot Point which will expand Abbot Point Coal capacity to 50 million tonnes of export coal per year.

  Cerito Road Construction
Council has partnered with Queensland Transport and their road construction project team (Roadtek) in the commencement of the construction of Cerito Road Project Completed project provides a sealed road access from Bowen via Collinsville to the southern Bowen Basin Coal fields.

Abbott Point Coal Terminal Stage 3 Expansion
Construction of additional onshore handling facilities and an additional offshore berth and ship loader to increase coal throughput to 50 Mt/a. When the rail link is completed in conjunction with the potential expansion of the Abbot Point Coal Terminal to 50 million tonnes p.a. capacity. This will allow Queensland to export at least 70% more coal through the Abbot Point terminal in the Bowen Basin which could be worth up to $4 billion a year.

Further expansion up to 100 million tonnes capacity p.a. is being considered at present.

Abbott Point Coal Terminal Stage 2
Expansion - Completed

Abbot Point Coal Terminal’s X21 (Stage 2) expansion has been completed on time and on budget. Officially opened by the Premier Hon. Anna Bligh on 8 November 2007.

  ENERGY PROJECTS
A reliable, reasonably priced power supply is instrumental in developing new Abbot Point industrial precinct and other commercial and business opportunities which lie in years ahead.

Proposed Base Load Power Plant for North Qld
It seems that continuous growth across NQ will require a sizeable base load power station to be located in NQ. Bowen Shire Council and BCE inc. promote Collinsville as preferred location, utilizing new clean coal technologies.

Power Transmission
Powerlink is currently upgrading its lines from Nebo to Collinsville and commenced in June 2007 the construction of the 132 KVA Collinsville to Bowen power line project to support the Abbott Point Industrial area.  This is a multi million dollar investment by Powerlink in the future of Bowen.

Sonoma Coal - Collinsville
As part of the huge expansion of coal mining within the Bowen basin the new Sonoma Coal Mine at Collinsville has  commenced construction and will produce approximately 40 million tones over fifteen years.
